1:72 Nakajima J1N Gekko Control Surfaces is a masking set with which the control surfaces and flaps of a model gain a three-dimensional look without any work on the plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set contains painting templates through which a shadow is sprayed along the outline of the moving surfaces. The eye then reads the surface as a separate, slightly deflected part, even though nothing has been done to the plastic. The effect is optical and concerns the paint only. The set is for 1:72 scale.
The Nakajima J1N Gekko was a twin-engine Japanese aircraft that in the end made its mark mainly as a night fighter. The Allies used the code name Irving for it. A twin-engine layout means large tail surfaces and a long wing, so there are a fair number of areas on a model where the effect can be applied.
The classic route to deflected surfaces runs through cutting the control surface off, dressing the edges and attaching it anew. That means a risk of destroying the fine surface detail around the cut, and on a model in a small scale a cut is hard to disguise. A masking set gets around that step: nothing is cut, nothing is glued back on and the surface texture stays untouched. The shadow is sprayed only onto the finished top coat.
