The rounded canopy of the 1:72 Thunderbolt calls for an accurate cut; this set brings one for the outer face of the glass. Matched to the part from the Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt received a rounded one-piece cockpit cover only during production of the D series and it transformed the aircraft beyond recognition. The spine running from the cockpit to the fin disappeared and for the first time the pilot could see what was happening behind his tail, which in a fight with German fighters decided between life and death. The weapons stayed the same: four machine guns in each half of the wing, eight barrels of 12.7 mm caliber in all with an enormous supply of ammunition. With that armament and an armored cockpit the machine was splendidly suited to attacks on ground targets, where it gathered most of its successes.
Two forms of this set exist, because individual kit manufacturers do not give the rounded cover exactly the same outlines. This variant allows for the part from the mold Tamiya uses. The difference tends to be a tenth of a millimeter in the width of the frame, but it is precisely that which decides whether the mask fits or overlaps.
After spraying, the film is lifted at an acute angle and clean glass is left beneath it, without the matte clouding that arises when a frame is painted with a brush and overflows. The result is a frame whose width does not change along its length. The kit itself is naturally not included, and neither are paints and thinners. Anyone who has once tried masking a 1:72 cockpit by hand will reach straight for this the second time.
