1:72 P-51D Mustang 110gal fuel tanks PRINT are add-on drop tanks of 110 gallons for a Mustang model. They replace the tanks from the kit and are fitted under the wing of a finished model.
Responsibility details are not available.
Without auxiliary tanks the long-range escorts over Europe and the Pacific would not have been possible. This set from the Czech firm Eduard brings a pair of drop tanks of the type used on the P-51D. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory that replaces the corresponding parts of the base kit.
The Mustang made its name precisely on range. Its internal fuel would have lasted only for a short sortie; it was the tanks slung under the wing that gave it the reach to escort bomber formations deep over enemy territory. The tanks were dropped before combat so the machine could regain agility. Besides all-metal ones there were also tanks of pressed paper, so with a model it pays to find out which ones the particular machine whose markings you want to use actually carried.
The mounting has to be symmetrical, otherwise the model will look out of true on its base. Use a flat surface, therefore, and set both tanks in place at once. The surface of the tanks tends to be smooth, so every irregularity shows on it and it pays to polish them before painting. It is better to spray them separately and attach them to the model at the very end. Watch also that the mounting points match the spacing of the pylons on the wing.
