A pair of Mustangs of the 79th Fighter Squadron of the 20th Group on one 1:72 sheet. The data names the machines 44-13660 with the code MC-B and 44-15198 with the code MC-L.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 20th Fighter Group was among the units that moved to Mustangs in the middle of 1944 and from then on escorted bombers as well as attacking targets on the ground. This sheet offers markings for two of its machines of the 79th Squadron: serial number 44-13660 with the code MC-B, whose pilot was Lieutenant Kenneth A. Skinner, and 44-15198 with the code MC-L flown by Lieutenant John B. Lee.
The pair of letters MC was the calling card of the squadron, the last letter identified the particular aircraft. The group became known for attacks on airfields in which it descended right down to the ground, and a high degree of wear on the machines matched that. For a modeler that is exactly the opportunity: the markings from this sheet look best on a fuselage that has not stayed factory clean.
The personal lettering under the cockpit fills in the character of each machine. Photographs of both aircraft are available in literature on the Eighth Air Force and are worth tracking down, because they reveal even small things such as the position of the footsteps or faded shades around the exhausts.
In this scale the code letters on the fuselage are only a few millimeters, and yet the eye rests on them first. Transfer them therefore onto a sufficiently damp area where they can still be moved, and check the spacing from above as well as from the side. Only when it sits right, soak the water off and leave the model to rest.
