A photo-etched set of the Zoom series for a model of the Martin PBM-5A Mariner patrol flying boat in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but a metal accessory for a plastic model. At Eduard, Zoom is a smaller set than the full etch: it contains a narrower selection of parts and is meant for the modeler who wants to raise the level of a model without long work over a large fret. For the same type the brand also has full etched sets aimed at the interior, the exterior and the bomb bay. The maker is the Czech firm Eduard.
The Martin PBM Mariner was a twin-engined patrol flying boat of the US Navy with a markedly gull wing and twin vertical tail surfaces. During the Second World War it patrolled over the ocean, hunted for submarines and rescued the crews of downed machines. The PBM-5A version was an amphibian – retractable wheeled landing gear let it operate both from water and from a hard runway, and that is exactly why it stayed in service into the postwar years.
Cut the fret up with a scalpel on a hard surface and run the bends over a straight edge. Degrease the metal you want to paint and lay down a primer underneath. Carry small parts with tweezers or with the moistened tip of a brush, which holds them more easily. Apply super glue in a tiny amount with the point of a pin, so that it does not run onto the surrounding surface.
