A set of masks for spraying the canopy glazing of a model of the Czechoslovak Praga XE-55 aircraft in 1:72 scale. The masks are shaped to the individual panes of the glazing, so there is no need for the slow business of cutting tape and guessing at shapes. The result is a sharp boundary between the frame and the clear surface, which is hard to achieve by hand.
The glazing is the first thing a viewer notices on a finished model, and inaccurately sprayed frames spoil the impression of otherwise good work. A mask also protects the clear part throughout the painting, so neither overspray nor dust settles on it. Once lifted off, the surface stays clean and transparent.
Peel off the individual pieces, lay them on the matching pane of the glazing and press them down with a blunt toothpick so the edges seat perfectly. Apply the interior cockpit shade first, then the exterior color. Lift the masks off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; leave it too long and they come away less easily. Touch up any overspray at the edge of the frame with a fine brush.
The Praga XE-55 was a Czechoslovak aircraft intended for artillery observation, casualty evacuation and carrying paratroopers. It is a marginal and all the more interesting type of home aircraft production, and that range of duties - observation, evacuation and transport - is unusual for a single machine.
