About product

Armory 1:72 Panther Ausf.D, commander's cupola

This is not a tank kit but a single replacement part in cast resin: the commander's cupola on the turret roof of the German Pz.Kpfw.V Panther tank, Ausf.D version, in 1:72 scale. The shape of this cupola is precisely one of the main recognition features of the early version: the Ausf.D carried a tall cylindrical cupola with vision slits, whereas later versions received a lower cast cupola with periscopes.

Why replace the cupola

In 1:72 scale the part is only a few millimeters across and injection-molded plastic can barely suggest its outline on it. The vision slits merge, the edges are rounded and the hatch tends to be cast as one flat surface. A resin casting delivers crisp edges, deeper slits and a more legible hatch. Because the cupola stands out above the silhouette of the vehicle and the viewer looks down on it, it is one of the few small parts that really pay off to replace on a finished model.

Building and painting tips

Work over a tray, as the part is small and springs away easily. Wash the mold release agent off the casting, cut the casting block away with a fine razor saw at the lower edge and sand the seating surface flat so that the cupola sits on the roof with no gap. Cyanoacrylate in gel form will give you time to align it. Before gluing, check that the cupola is turned correctly in relation to the front of the turret. It is painted together with the vehicle; the vision slits are then emphasized with a dark wash and the upper edge with a dry brush in a lighter shade. If you are building the model with the hatch open, count on the inside of the cupola being visible and suggest it at least with a dark color.

Who the part is for

  • modelers building the Panther Ausf.D version in 1:72 scale
  • those who want the correct shape of the early version commander's cupola
  • makers of dioramas and cabinet models seen from above
  • competition modelers who judge the accuracy of small details

The part is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a single replacement part, a commander's cupola, which you fit into your Panther model in 1:72 scale.

It is not suitable. The cupola matches the early Ausf.D version; later versions had a different, lower type.

Sand the seating surface flat on sanding paper laid on a board and use gel cyanoacrylate, which lets you align the cupola before it sets.

Usually not; it is painted together with the vehicle. If you are building the model with the hatch open, however, it pays to paint the inside in a dark color beforehand.
