About product

IBG 1:72 PZL.23 Karas II, a Polish light bomber

This plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker IBG Models captures the PZL.23 Karas light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft in the form designated Karas II, that is in the later version with a more powerful radial engine. In size and complexity the model is a rewarding one-day to weekend build and it fits well into a collection of prewar aircraft of Eastern Europe.

The real subject

The PZL.23 Karas was an all-metal low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and a crew of three, with a characteristic gondola under the fuselage for the lower gunner and the bomb aimer. Series production of the first version began in 1936 and continued with a more powerful form with a license-built radial engine, of which several hundred were made. In the autumn of 1939 the Karas was the main combat aircraft of the Polish bomber and reconnaissance units and it attacked advancing columns. Its low speed and weak defensive armament, however, made it an easy target against modern fighters and the losses were heavy.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale it pays to paint the cockpit and the lower gondola first, because once the fuselage is closed you will not reach them. Glue the fixed landing gear and its struts fully home and let them cure properly, because the model stands on them with its whole weight. Mask the glazing with strips of masking tape or with a ready-made mask rather than with liquid mask applied freehand. Polish aircraft of that time wore a dark olive upper finish and a light blue-gray underside, and the dividing line was soft. Accent the engraved lines with a thin wash, because it is easy to overweather a small model.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Polish Air Force and the prewar school of design
  • Builders of a collection of aircraft of the September campaign of 1939
  • Those looking for a smaller build for a couple of evenings

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the later production form of the type with a more powerful radial engine, of which markedly more examples were built than of the first version.

Three: a pilot, an observer and a lower gunner, whose station was in the gondola under the fuselage.

Yes, with a little patience. The model is small and straightforward; just watch the fine landing gear struts and the masking of the glazing.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
