Safety belts are among the elements that in the cockpit of a plastic kit are either missing altogether or only suggested by relief on the seat. A photo-etched set replaces them with a part of genuinely thin section and with rendered buckles, so that the belts look like fabric and can be given a natural sag over the edge of the seat. In 1:72 scale this is one of the few interventions in the cockpit that really is visible under an open canopy.
These are photo-etched belts in 1:72 scale for Royal Air Force aircraft. The word late in the name distinguishes the later configuration of the belts from the earlier type, which is a separate set. The material, according to the name, is steel: steel etching resists bending more than softer materials, but it holds the shape and the sag exactly as you set them. The number of sets on the fret and the list of parts are given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
Separate the parts with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than by breaking them out, otherwise the thin belt will twist. Shape them with tweezers or a bending tool in small steps and keep trying their position on the seat. They are glued with super glue applied in a minute amount, for instance with the tip of a wire. Form the sag before the glue sets, because after that the part will not move. The surface finish is stated in the manufacturer's description; photo-etched parts can always be painted, and degreasing and a thin primer coat improve the adhesion of the paint.
