An injection-molded plastic set of siege machines in 1:72 scale from the Russian brand Zvezda. It is made up of two main machines, an onager stone thrower and a scorpio bolt shooter, and with them go wheeled wooden shields, which covered attackers as they advanced on the walls, and ammunition in the form of stone balls and bolts. It is not a finished model but a kit in hard plastic that is glued and painted. It suits figures and dioramas in the same scale.
Both the onager and the scorpio are torsion engines: the power came from twisted rope of sinew or horsehair, not from a counterweight. The scorpio, a shooter of heavy bolts, was already known to the Hellenistic armies and the Roman legions used it as a precise long-range weapon against individuals and formations. The onager, by contrast, is a stone thrower of late antiquity, intended for battering walls and for lobbing fire over them. The wheeled shields that the set holds belong among the oldest elements of siege equipment of all and protected sappers and shooters from fire from the wall walks.
The wheels and the throwing arm of the onager can be built movable, and if you do not glue the elevation strut on the scorpio, the angle of fire stays adjustable too. Add the rope and the bowstring from thread of your own, as torsion engines gain markedly from it. Paint the wood in several close shades, so the beams are not uniform, and work a dark wash into the grooves. Do the ironwork and the bolt heads in a dark metallic shade and go over it lightly with graphite once dry.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
