About product

Sopwith Camel 1:72 - plastic kit from Academy

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter biplane of the First World War Sopwith Camel in 1:72 scale from Academy. It is an undemanding kit with a low part count, engraved surface detail and a suggestion of the engine and the landing gear. Thanks to its simplicity it suits beginners too, who want to try building a biplane. The exact package contents and the marking schemes are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was a British single-seat fighter of the First World War and one of the most successful Allied aircraft of its day - more victories are credited to it than to any other Allied fighter of the conflict. It was powered by a rotary engine whose gyroscopic effect made the aircraft agile, but also dangerous for inexperienced pilots. The pair of synchronized machine guns was covered by the characteristic hump in front of the cockpit, after which it got the nickname Camel. It was used on the Western Front from 1917.

Building and painting tips

Paint the cockpit and the engine before assembling the fuselage. Apply primer to the plastic. With a biplane the bracing wires are the key - the wires between the wings and the fuselage - which give the model credibility; they can be imitated with thin filament or with a line stretched between the struts. The fabric-covered wings will be enlivened by a subtle suggestion of the ribs and discreet shading. Pick out the engraved detail with a fine wash and apply the decals onto gloss varnish. Patience in fitting the upper wing and the struts pays off.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of the aircraft and the air war of the First World War.
  • For beginners who want to try building a biplane.
  • For modelers who want to practice bracing wires in a small scale.
  • For collectors of historical aircraft for a display case in 1:72 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. It has a low part count and a simple build. A certain amount of attention is called for only in fitting the upper wing and the struts, as with every biplane.

The bracing wires imitate the wires between the wings and the fuselage. They are not essential, but they add markedly to the credibility of a biplane; they can be made from thin filament or from a stretched line.

It got the nickname from the characteristic hump of the cover over the pair of synchronized machine guns in front of the pilot's cockpit.
