A plastic kit of the Soviet M-30 divisional howitzer in 1:72 scale from the Russian manufacturer Zvezda, released in 2011 in the Art of Tactic game line. The parts click together, so glue is not necessary. The package holds the howitzer and two crew figures, a base with a hole for a flag and a game card. There are no decals in the set.
The M-30 howitzer of 122 mm caliber went into production in 1939 and became the most widespread artillery weapon of the Red Army in the Second World War. It fired indirect fire against infantry and against fortifications, and from 1943 anti-tank ammunition was added to its repertoire. The design with the splitting trail legs of the carriage and a shield was simple and robust, so Soviet production ran until 1955 and the howitzers were kept in armies outside Europe long after that. The same weapon formed the basis of the SU-122 self-propelled gun.
The snap-fit joints hold, but on an artillery carriage it pays to run liquid cement for plastic over them, so the model survives being handled. The whole weapon is usually sprayed in a single green shade; bring out the recesses with a wash and add dust pigments to the wheels and the lower parts. Paint the crew figures separately, before they are seated by the gun.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
