This item is a small modeling accessory that suits anywhere a scene should look lived-in. The boxes can be stacked on the rear deck of a self-propelled gun, leaned against the wall of a house or scattered around a firing position. They are released by Black Dog as part of its range of ammunition and armament, and in 1:72 scale, where small things like these are harder to come by than on larger models.
The 122 millimeter caliber was one of the mainstays of Soviet artillery. It was used by howitzers, by self-propelled guns and by the gun of the heaviest Soviet tanks. Rounds of this size were split into the projectile and the cased charge, because a loader in a cramped fighting compartment could not lift them in one piece. That is exactly why photographs from the front so often show wooden boxes stacked around vehicles, on the fenders and at the rear.
Cyanoacrylate glue holds the joints; on resin, ordinary cement for plastic has no effect. The wood looks good when you lay a thin oil glaze over a light base and suggest the grain with a fine brush. Darken the metal fittings and add a hint of wear to the edges. Leave the lettering to be guessed at rather than read, as sharp text would be distracting in 1:72 scale.
