The 1:72 Soviet soldiers 1941 figures relate to the first year of the war in the east. The year 1941 holds a special place among modelers, because the kit and the hardware of the time still looked quite different from the close of the conflict.
In 1941 the pullover tunic, the greatcoat rolled over the shoulder and the folded canvas haversack instead of the later pouches were still common in the Soviet infantry. The helmet was only then replacing earlier patterns, so both forms could be met at once within a single unit. For a diorama that means figures from 1941 cannot be swapped without thought for figures from 1944 and 1945, even though only a few seasons separate them.
The basis is to saturate the brown-green tone of the cloth, so that it does not slide into a flat olive. Keep the canvas parts of the kit lighter and cooler than the tunic; that sets apart materials which would otherwise merge. Weapons in dark metal with a light rub on the edges will give the figures the crispness a small scale needs. Finally add muted light on the shoulders and the crown of the head; the figure will visually lift off the background.
If you are building a scene with hardware, first check that the vehicle and the figures match the same year.
