Injection-molded plastic kit of the French SPAD XIII fighter biplane of the First World War in 1:72 scale from Academy. It is a classic plastic kit with good fit, a straightforward build and waterslide decals. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The SPAD S.XIII was one of the most successful and most widely built fighters of the First World War. Unlike many aircraft of the day with a rotary engine, it used a powerful liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza V8 engine, which made it fast and robust in a dive. It was armed with a pair of machine guns above the fuselage and was flown by the leading Allied aces. More than eight thousand were built.
On a biplane the precise seating of the interplane struts is essential; here the struts drop into slots, which makes alignment easier. Once the airframe is glued together comes the bracing - stretching the bracing wires between the wings and the fuselage from stretched sprue or modeling thread, which gives the biplane a convincing look. Spray the base coat over a primer; wooden and fabric surfaces come to life in toned-down shades and with a light wash that brings out the ribbing and the texture of the covering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
