The model is a finished product. It arrives assembled, painted and with the markings of No. 328 Squadron as of 1943 applied. Nothing is glued, filled or sprayed, so even the most demanding part of the work falls away, namely achieving an even finish on a small model.
The Trop designation means tropical fit. Machines intended for the Mediterranean, North Africa and other dusty regions were given a bulky air intake filter under the front of the fuselage, which protected the engine from drawing in sand. The filter markedly changes the shape of the lower nose and is the most easily recognized feature of tropical Spitfires; thanks to it the model stands apart from home-based machines even at a distance. The Vb version carried two 20 mm cannons supplemented by four 7.7 mm machine guns and was in its day the most widespread combat variant of the type. No. 328 Squadron was one of the Royal Air Force units made up of French personnel.
It is precisely the tropical filter that is the reason to have this item in a collection beside an ordinary Spitfire Mk.V: two machines of the same version, but a markedly different nose silhouette. A finished standard also means that the part that is complicated in shape is already seated and painted. Place the model in a glazed display case where the front of the fuselage can be seen from the side. Remove the dust with a soft brush or compressed air, not with a damp cloth, and do not leave the model in direct sun, which changes the shade of the finish and the clarity of the glazing.
The model is supplied finished: assembled and painted. Glue, paints and decals are not needed.
