About product

Eduard 1:72 Spitfire Mk.IX — photo-etched radiator grilles

A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard that replaces the grilles (meshes) of the radiators under the wings of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX in 1:72 scale. The plastic part from the mold tends to be a solid plate with only a suggested pattern, so looking into the radiator you meet a wall. A photo-etched grille, by contrast, is genuinely see-through — you can see through it into the radiator duct and a real sense of depth appears. Although it is a small thing, on a finished model it is surprisingly visible even in 1:72 scale, because the radiators are a prominent and unobscured feature on the underside of the wing. The set is intended for Spitfire Mk.IX kits in 1:72 from Eduard. It is not an aircraft model — the kit itself is not included in the package.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a quick answer to the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 — the proven Spitfire airframe received a two-stage supercharged Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft its advantage at greater altitudes back. It was with this powerplant that the characteristic two radiators under the wings arrived (on older versions a single large radiator sat under one wing only) — and those are exactly what this set addresses. The Mk.IX became one of the most numerous and most successful versions of the Spitfire, and Czechoslovak fighter pilots in the RAF flew it too.

Use

  • Cut the original suggested grille out of the plastic part and clean the opening up flush.
  • Separate the photo-etched mesh from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard backing.
  • Glue it with cyanoacrylate around the edge, so that the glue does not get into the mesh openings.
  • Degrease the metal before painting and prime it, then paint over it to match the underside of the wing.

Who the set is for

For modelers building the Spitfire Mk.IX in 1:72 who want to raise the credibility of the model with a quick and simple job exactly where it shows most. Working with photo-etch in this scale calls for tweezers, a sharp knife and a steady hand.

This is an accessory set, not an aircraft model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The package contains only the photo-etched radiator grilles. The Spitfire Mk.IX kit has to be bought separately.

The plastic part is a solid plate with a suggested grille. The photo-etched mesh is see-through, so you can see into the radiator and real depth appears.

It is worth degreasing the metal, priming it and painting it in the shade of the underside of the wing, so that the grille blends with the model.

Cyanoacrylate, applied around the edge so that the glue does not get into the mesh openings.
