About product

1:72 Sukhoi Su-35S, a full Eduard photo-etched set

This item is an add-on set of photo-etched parts in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand Eduard, not a kit of an aircraft. A full photo-etched set is the most extensive of the manufacturer's photo-etched ranges: while the lighter Zoom range aims only at a selected group of pre-painted interior parts, a full fret tends to be more extensive and reaches beyond the cockpit as well. The point of the set is to replace the simplified plastic shapes on a finished model with thin metal parts.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum wall thickness, so bulkheads, grilles, sheet-metal panels or restraint elements come out coarser in a small scale than reality would suggest. Photo-etched brass sheet is an order thinner and has sharp edges, which tells in 1:72 scale above all where an edge is seen against the light. The subject, the modern twin-engine Sukhoi Su-35S fighter aircraft, has a quantity of small access panels and grilles where this difference is clearly apparent.

Usage tips

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, never by twisting. Before gluing, degrease the brass with alcohol or acetone, as otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two razor blades, so that the edge comes out straight and sharp. Thin cyanoacrylate applied with a pin suits the gluing; modeling cement for plastic does not work on metal. Unpainted metal parts have to be given a base coat before painting.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are building the Su-35S in 1:72 scale and want detail beyond what plastic offers
  • More experienced builders used to working with tweezers and a scalpel
  • Those who prefer metal parts to scribing and decals
  • Builders of modern aviation subjects who are taking a model to competition level

This is an accessory for a build, not a stand-alone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of photo-etched parts that serves to detail an already purchased Su-35S kit in 1:72 scale. The model itself has to be bought separately.

Best of all a thin cyanoacrylate applied in the smallest possible amount, or a two-part epoxy. Ordinary modeling cement for plastic will not bond metal.

Zoom is a lighter selection aimed mainly at pre-painted cockpit parts. A full photo-etched set is more extensive and addresses details outside the interior as well.
