About product

Short Sunderland Mk.V 1:72, photo-etched ordnance bay set (Eduard)

This item is not a kit of the aircraft but a photo-etched detail accessory intended for a Sunderland Mk.V model in 1:72 scale. It deals with an area that injection-molded plastic can manage only in simplified form: thin brass sheet makes it possible to create stiffeners, profiles and edges in a thickness that is technologically unattainable on a plastic part. The manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard, which has been making photo-etched accessories since the 1990s.

The real subject

The Short Sunderland was a British four-engined flying boat derived from the Short Empire airliner. It served mainly with RAF Coastal Command on long-range patrols over the Atlantic and in anti-submarine work, where its great range and long endurance came into their own. It did not stow its ordnance in an ordinary bomb bay in the bottom of the fuselage but on traversing beams that were run out through openings in the sides of the fuselage beneath the wing before release, and that is a detail which will set a model with this area opened markedly apart. The Mk.V version received Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines, which replaced the older Bristol Pegasus and improved behavior at high takeoff weights.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a glass or other hard surface, not with nippers, which bend the thin sheet. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, always along the scored line. Before gluing, degrease the sheet with alcohol and let it dry completely. It is glued with cyanoacrylate, ideally in a gel consistency or applied at points with a thin cyanoacrylate; ordinary plastic cement does not hold on metal. Start the painting with a good primer, otherwise paint flakes off smooth metal during handling alone.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to show the inner areas of the fuselage on a large flying boat
  • Builders in 1:72 scale with basic experience of photo-etched parts
  • Anyone interested in naval aviation and the machines of RAF Coastal Command
  • Those who build a cabinet model with parts of the structure exposed

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory intended for finishing a Sunderland Mk.V model in 1:72 scale. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

Cyanoacrylate-based super glue, best in gel form or applied at points with a toothpick. Plastic cement will not join metal.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers and a hard surface will do. A bending tool for photo-etched parts makes the work markedly easier and pays off on longer bends.

Photo-etched sets are designed for a particular kit in a given scale. Before buying we recommend checking that the set matches the model you are building.
