About product

The Eduard photo-etched set 1:350 USS Alaska CB-1, the first part

This set from the Czech maker Eduard adds parts of thin metal sheet to a model of the American large cruiser USS Alaska in 1:350 scale. On ship models photo-etching is practically irreplaceable: railings, ladders, platforms, antennas and gratings have a thickness in reality that injection-molded plastic can never achieve, and it is precisely these elements that turn a ship model into a convincing scene. The designation first part means it is one piece of a split set; the name itself says this is the first of them. The set is not a kit and cannot be used without the plastic model.

The real subject

USS Alaska was the lead ship of the American class of large cruisers, entering service in the second half of the Second World War. It was a vessel of greater displacement than the heavy cruisers had, with its main gun armament in three rotating turrets and with a strong anti-aircraft defense. It was deployed above all in the Pacific as an escort for carrier groups. Extensive superstructures, platforms and masts give the model an enormous number of places where photo-etched parts come into their own.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and deburr the remains of the tabs with a fine file. Make the bends along the scored grooves, best of all in a photo-etch bending tool. Shape long railings gradually and lay them against the deck dry before you fix them. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin; on long runs it helps to tack the ends down in spots and only then to glue the rest. Degrease the metal and apply an adhesion primer before painting; railings and antennas are more comfortably sprayed on the fret before being cut out. It is advisable to give the finished model a display case, as thin parts are vulnerable to knocks as well as to dust.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:350 scale
  • Modelers who build the USS Alaska and want realistic railings and platforms
  • Anyone interested in the US Navy of the Second World War
  • Patient builders with experience of photo-etched parts

The set is an accessory to a kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The set for this model is split into several parts because of its extent. This is the first of them; whether you need the following parts as well depends on how thoroughly you want to finish the model.

First lay it on dry and shape it to the deck. Then tack both ends down in spots with cyanoacrylate glue and only afterwards glue the rest on section by section.

The unpainted metal parts yes, after an adhesion primer has been applied. It is practical to spray them while still on the fret, before they are cut out.
