About product

Dead Design 1:72 - masking set for the Tachikawa Ki-54 Hei Hickory

A masking set in 1:72 scale meant for a model of the Japanese twin-engine Tachikawa Ki-54 aircraft in the Hei version. It is not a kit but an accessory: the precisely cut self-adhesive masks match the shapes on the model, so the long-winded cutting of strips and sticking masking tape down blind both fall away. With masks of this range it is typically a matter of masking the glazed areas and the frames that adjoin them; the exact extent of the set is stated on the box.

The real subject

The Tachikawa Ki-54 was a Japanese twin-engine all-metal aircraft of low-wing layout, used as a trainer and liaison machine. It was built in several versions, which differed by purpose - from crew training through gunnery and bombing practice to light transport and liaison duty; the Hei designation belongs to the later forms of this range. What is characteristic of it is the large cabin glazing and the divided frames, that is exactly the areas that are hardest to mask on a model. The Allied code name for the type was Hickory.

Usage tips

Before sticking the masks on, degrease the surface and let the finish cure fully. Transfer the masks with flat-jawed tweezers and press them down with a soft tool, so that the edge bears all the way around the frame - at a small scale it is adhesion of the edge that decides. Lay the paint on in several very thin coats and spray at right angles, otherwise it will bleed. Take the masks off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; under a hard finish the edge tears away. Polish the glazing beforehand and protect it from adhesive residue, wiping off any marks with a damp cloth without solvent.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese twin-engine aircraft in 1:72 scale.
  • Modelers who do not want to mask broken-up glazing by hand.
  • Those who demand crisp and straight frame lines at a small scale.
  • Modelers saving time over repeated small masks.

The package holds only the masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set for a kit you have already bought. The package holds no paints or glue.

With masks of this range it is usually the glazed areas and their frames. The exact extent is stated on the box of the set.

Take them off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, and pull them at a shallow angle backward along the surface rather than straight up.
