Decals 1:72 for four British Tornados from the Tabuk base in 1991. Named machines of three squadrons including the two-letter codes.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British formations deployed in the Persian Gulf in 1991 operated among other places from the Tabuk base in the northwest of Saudi Arabia. From there they flew low attacks on airfields and on ground targets, later moving to attacks from greater altitudes with guided munitions. The crews gave their machines names and wrote them on the nose along with a two-letter code that replaced the ordinary peacetime markings.
The name of the last of them referred to an anti-radiation missile whose carriers had the task of silencing enemy radars. It was No. 9 Squadron that filled this role, and its machines differed from the others in the stores under the fuselage. The remaining three names came about right among the crews and have nothing to do with official markings.
The machines were given a hastily applied uniform sand finish over the original European camouflage, which wore off quickly and let the metal show through on the leading edges. For the modeler that is rewarding: a light base, careful polishing of the edges and a dry brush for the exhaust traces. The decals belong only on a finished surface sealed to a gloss, because the lettering is tiny and on a matte area air would be left under it.
