This plastic kit in 1:72 scale treats the high-altitude U-2 reconnaissance airplane in its early U-2A version. Thanks to its exceptional span the finished model is striking even in this scale and in a display case comes across more as a large glider than as a combat machine. The Lockheed U-2 is a single-engine airplane designed in the mid-1950s for reconnaissance flights at great altitude. To reach the altitude required, it was given a wing of high aspect ratio and low wing loading, a lightened structure and a single jet engine. The U-2A version represents the original configuration, with a less powerful engine than later variants. The way it taxis is unusual too: the main landing gear is arranged one unit behind the other on the center line of the fuselage, and during the takeoff run the wing is supported by jettisonable auxiliary outrigger wheels. That is exactly why the machine is difficult to land and calls for exceptionally precise handling.
The long slender wing is the most sensitive part of the build. Glue the joint of the wing to the fuselage on a flat surface, check the symmetry of the dihedral and let the joint cure properly before you move the model. Spray and fit the cockpit before closing the fuselage. The dark bare-metal or dark flat finish typical of this type reveals every irregularity, so sand the joints carefully and use a primer. It is a good idea to bring the dark areas to life with light shading of the individual panels, otherwise the model merges visually into one surface. If you decide to build the model with the landing gear extended, check its stability, because the model is long and light.
