Three marking options for the carrier-based F-4B Phantom II fighter of the US Navy in 1:72 scale. The subjects come from the carriers Midway, Coral Sea and Constellation between 1965 and 1972.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-4B version was the first naval form of the Phantom in series service. A two-seat cockpit, J79 engines and missile armament with no gun made it a machine built on catching the target at long range, which over Vietnam turned out to be both an advantage and a weakness. It was the crews of F-4B aircraft who on June 17, 1965 opened the US Navy account of aerial victories in that conflict.
The sheet offers three specific aircraft with the names of their crews. One of them is a squadron machine from the deck of the Midway from June 1965, the second an aircraft of a unit operating from the Coral Sea in the spring of 1972 and the third a Phantom from the Constellation in the summer of 1966. Each option has its own code on the fin, a number on the nose and the appropriate national insignia, so they can be built side by side as a survey of how naval markings developed over seven years.
What to bear in mind:
The set suits a modeler who wants to do one specific aircraft properly, not someone looking for a stock of markings for the drawer. A Phantom model is not in the package.
For painting carrier machines of the mid-1960s a simple rule applies: a light gray upper finish and a white underside. After months at sea both go gray, dark streaks appear around the exhausts and panel edges wear through. Discreet weathering will do more for the finished model than the most careful work with tweezers.
