1:72 is the scale in which a whole piece of an airfield or of a village green can fit onto a board the size of a book. The figure of an adult person measures around twenty-five millimeters in it, so a Christmas tree comes out barely an inch tall. That makes it all the more apparent how strongly it can transform a scene: a single decorated conifer in the corner of a hangar says more about the time of the action than a whole page of description.
Inside lie thirteen pieces. The base is made up of the tree and the base to go under its trunk, and a star closes the top off. Along with them belong a set of six hanging ornaments, a pair of wrapped parcels, a small sled and a bear. The suite thus covers both the tree itself and its surroundings, which, when looking at a finished scene, tend to be more interesting than the tree alone.
In this scale the work is done with tweezers and a sharp scalpel, not with the fingers. It proves its worth to paint the components while they are still on the sprue, to separate them only at the end and to blacken in the trace of the gate with a thin brush. For the ornaments a dot of saturated color is enough to suggest them, as the detail is lost anyway: the eye of the viewer will fill the rest in for itself. For snow a modeling paste or a sifted pigment suits, applied rather sparingly.
The set is intended for finishing a setting of your own off. The base, the buildings and the people are not in it, so reckon with that while planning the composition. It comes out most strongly where a holiday meets everyday operations: by equipment at rest, on the ramp of a warehouse or in the corner of a workshop, where somebody has made Christmas for themselves in spite of the circumstances. The contrast of two moods in a modeling scene is far more effective than the best possible execution of a single object.
