The M1070 is a heavy tractor of the US Army with all-wheel drive, intended to tow a semi-trailer with armored vehicles. It runs on large cross-country tires with a coarse tread pattern that have to carry a considerable axle load and at the same time cope with driving off paved roads. It is the wheels that give the vehicle its distinctive look: they are tall, wide and on a model they unmistakably catch the eye first.
Dry fit the wheels and watch that they stand upright and that they all sit down in one plane; on a multi-axle tractor a leaning wheel shows at once. Paint them off the model and all at once, so that they have the same shade. Bring the tread pattern out with a dry brush in a lighter gray and press dust pigments into the grooves; it is exactly the contrast between the clean upper part of the wheel and the clogged lower part that gives the impression of a used vehicle. Never paint rubber in pure black.
