1:72 Whitley

Whitley masking set 1:72: Peewit

A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the British Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but an addition to the build: the masks are stuck onto the glazed areas so that they stay clear during painting and the canopy framing gets sharp, straight edges. The material is a low-tack masking tape that adapts well to the shape of the part and leaves no glue residue when it is removed. On a multi-seat bomber with a great deal of glazing the set saves a lot of time compared with cutting by hand.

The real subject

The Whitley was a British twin-engined night bomber that entered service in the second half of the 1930s. Its characteristic feature was the attitude of the fuselage in flight, visibly nose down, caused by the fixed angle of incidence of the wing. At the start of the Second World War it flew night bombing and leaflet missions over Germany; later it served with Coastal Command patrolling over the sea and also for towing gliders and training paratroopers.

Use and tips

Degrease the clear part first and let it dry. Transfer the mask with tweezers, lay it in place and press the edges down carefully, for instance with a wooden stick, so that no paint runs under them. Spray the shade of the interior framing first, then the outer color according to the scheme. Remove the masks only once the paint has dried, with fine-tipped tweezers and at a shallow angle. It is practical to cover the larger exposed areas between the frames with liquid mask or a piece of tape.

Who the set is for

• Modelers who want sharp canopy framing without laboriously cutting tape
• Builders of British bombers of the Second World War
• Anyone building a model with a great many glazed areas
• Beginners who find masking glazing difficult

This is an addition for building a model. A model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
