About product

Width indicators for German vehicles 1:72 - four metal parts

A turned metal accessory from Master for models of German equipment in a small scale. According to the name it contains four width indicators, the rods that vehicles carried on their front fenders. Although it comes from a maker of turned barrels and gun parts, this is not armament.

In 1:72 it is a detail added, not a replacement

While in larger scales a plastic indicator can at least be suggested, in 1:72 it can hardly be molded at all: the diameter would be thinner than the wall of the mold. Kits therefore usually leave it out entirely. The turned metal part thus replaces nothing that is in the box; it adds a detail that would otherwise be missing from the model. The effect is unexpectedly large - a pair of rods on the front fenders gives the silhouette of the vehicle exactly the kind of small articulation that the eye reads as accuracy.

The real subject

Rod-type width indicators were mounted on the front fenders of German armored cars and half-tracks. For a driver with limited vision from a closed compartment they served as a reference for judging the width of the machine in narrow passages and in poor visibility. According to the name the set is aimed at a broad group of Sd.Kfz. types.

Fitting and painting

In this scale you work with tweezers only, on a light-colored surface. The hole is drilled with the finest bit you have and tried dry - the metal must not be forced into the plastic, because the fender will crack before the part does. It is fixed with a speck of gel cyanoacrylate applied with a pin, never with a drop from the bottle. It is painted with a brush of only a few hairs; metal takes a metal primer first and the surface is degreased beforehand. Fitting belongs right at the end of the build, after weathering.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of German equipment in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who want the detail that kits in a small scale leave out
  • For more experienced builders used to working with tweezers
  • For the finishing stage of the build, after painting and weathering

This is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

That is exactly the reason. In 1:72 scale a part this thin can hardly be molded, so kits mostly leave it out and the metal part supplies it.

It calls for tweezers, a fine drill bit and a steady hand. The glue is applied with a pin, not as a drop, otherwise it runs across the whole fender.

According to the name it is a set of four pieces.
