This is an accessory for a scene in 1:72 scale, not a model. A wooden cable drum is among the objects that in a real setting lie about everywhere where cabling is worked with: at building sites, at stations, in the yards of utility services, with signals units and in the rear. It suits a diorama precisely because it is immediately legible and yet takes up little room.
You can stand the drum upright as a full piece, lay it on its side, or use it as an improvised table or seat in a figure scene — that is a popular and believable motif. It also works well as filler for an empty corner of a base or as a support that a figure or a tool can lean against. In 1:72 scale it pays to place it so that it is visible from the main view of the diorama.
Rid the part of the casting residue, level the mating surface and degrease the surface. Lay down a thin base. Wood in a small scale is painted from darker to lighter: a brown base, a dark wash into the joints between the boards and finally a grayish beige dry brush, which picks out the edges and suggests weathered wood. The metal bands and nails only need to be suggested in a dark shade with a hint of rust. If you want to suggest wound cable, thin copper wire or a thread painted dark works well.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
