A plastic kit of the light off-road car Kübelwagen Typ 82 in the generous 1:9 scale from the German brand Revell. The package is described as a limited edition. A large scale means a sizeable finished model, markedly bigger parts that are easier to hold, and room for careful work on the interior and the drivetrain. At the same time it places higher demands on accurate gluing and above all on the quality of the paint finish over large surfaces, where every unevenness shows.
The Kübelwagen Typ 82 was a light off-road car derived from the design of the Volkswagen Typ 1 passenger car. It was powered by an air-cooled flat-four mounted at the rear, and the rear axle was driven. The car had no all-wheel drive; off road it was helped by its low weight, great ground clearance and reduction gearing in the rear wheel hubs. The body was simple sheet metal, with a canvas roof and a folding windshield. It was built in the first half of the 1940s and served mainly on liaison, reconnaissance and staff duties.
Glue the parts with thin cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action — on large parts that is more reliable than a thick gel. Assemble and paint the chassis, the engine and the interior before you close the body up. Apply a filler primer before painting; it will reveal small scratches left by sanding and even the surface out. Spray the large surfaces with an airbrush in several thin layers, otherwise uneven transitions and blotches appear. Treat the weathering sparingly: in 1:9 scale a coarse wash looks unnatural, and a fine emphasis of the edges, restrained dust on the underside of the car and light chipping on the edges of the fenders work better.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
