About product

MiG-19PM — 1:72, Clear Prop Models, Advanced edition

An injection-molded plastic kit of the missile-armed interceptor MiG-19PM in 1:72 scale. Clear Prop Models is a Ukrainian manufacturer and its kits come out at two levels of equipment — Advanced is the fuller package for more experienced modelers, while the Starter line leaves some of the accessories out. This box is the Advanced one: it contains ten sprues (one clear) with 180 plastic parts, a photo-etched sheet of 21 parts, two decal sheets and color assembly instructions. Markings are prepared for seven machines — among them Czechoslovak ones, and further Soviet, Polish, East German, Bulgarian and Hungarian aircraft.

The real subject

The MiG-19 was the first Soviet series-built supersonic fighter — a twin-engined machine with a markedly swept wing. The PM version is its interceptor form: it carried an Izumrud series airborne radar in the nose and — which is the essential thing about it — it lost all its cannon. Its only armament was four RS-2U air-to-air guided missiles, beam-riding and carried on pylons under the wing. That matched the doctrine of the day, according to which cannon would become obsolete in the missile age; experience in later conflicts disproved that reasoning and cannon came back to fighters. The machine is all the more interesting because the MiG-19PM also served with the Czechoslovak Air Force — and its markings are included in the box.

Building and painting tips

The kit has fine engraved surface detail and a well divided interior, so reckon with careful dry-fitting of the parts. Glue the plastic with thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Do not forget weight in the nose. The typical finish is unpainted natural metal — this calls for a perfectly sanded and primed surface and metallic or lacquer paint applied with an airbrush in thin coats; stir the pigment of the metallic paint thoroughly before spraying and leave it to the end, because it masks badly. Different shades on the individual panels will bring the model very much to life. Lay a gloss coat under the decals and bring out the nozzle rims and the area around the cockpit with a dark wash.

Who the model is for

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

  • Experienced modelers who want a richly equipped kit in 1:72
  • Collectors of Soviet and Eastern European Cold War equipment
  • Anyone interested in the Czechoslovak Air Force — Czechoslovak markings are in the box
  • Builders of missile-armed interceptors without cannon armament

FAQ

PM is the interceptor version of the MiG-19 with an airborne radar. It lost its cannon and its only armament was four RS-2U air-to-air guided missiles riding the radar beam. That followed from the idea of the day that cannon were obsolete in the missile age — time did not bear it out.

Yes. The MiG-19PM served with the Czechoslovak Air Force and the kit contains decals with Czechoslovak markings.

It is the fuller level of packaging from Clear Prop Models for more experienced modelers — besides the plastic it contains a photo-etched sheet and a generous decal sheet. The Starter line leaves some of the accessories out.

The manufacturer does not list masks with this boxing, so do not count on them. The cockpit can be masked with tape or with a separately bought set of masks.
