33rd Waffen Grenadier Division Of The SS Charlemagne (Type I) Plaque 40mm is a diorama plaque for the French grenadier division, in the first of the forms the manufacturer makes.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit, but a diorama accessory from Dynamo-Models. The plaque relates to the unit from the name and serves to mark the base of a scene or a display case. The size of 40 mm is part of the name. The designation Type I matters: the manufacturer makes two forms of the plaque for the same unit and this is the first of them. How the artwork of the two forms differs is shown by the illustration on the box.
Charlemagne is the French form of the name of Charles the Great, and as an honorific name it refers to the French origin of the unit's recruitment. The division with the sequence number 33 came about in 1944 by merging earlier French volunteer units and reached full combat commitment in Pomerania at the beginning of 1945, where it suffered heavy losses. The remnants of the unit then took part in the closing fighting in Berlin. The designation Waffen Grenadier Division Of The SS means an infantry division brought up to strength from the non-German population.
Because two forms exist for the unit, it is good to know which of them you are buying, especially if you are adding to a collection gradually. For a unified look across several plinths, keep to one form. Fitting it to a base is the closing step: level the area, degrease it and apply the glue in spots. The relief stands out best on a dark matte ground, where the edges catch the light and the plaque does not merge with its surroundings.
