An accessory for a diorama 25 mm in size carrying the emblem of the formation which is given in the name of the item as the 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland. It is not a vehicle kit and not a figure, but a small plaque fitted to a base, to a plinth or into a display case. With it a modeler closes off the work on a scene: a finished diorama gets a firm designation that will survive even a move to another display case or a trip to a competition.
The formation grew out of Dutch units set up during the occupation and was redesignated a division in February 1945. Unlike most of its sibling formations it was not committed in the east but stayed in the Netherlands, where at the end of the war it operated in the area between the rivers south of Arnhem and capitulated in May 1945. For a modeler that means an unambiguous setting for a scene: Western Europe, the last winter and spring of the war, Dutch country with dykes, canals and muddy field tracks.
Dutch scenes tend to be dark and damp, so a plaque on a brown or gray base may merge in. A narrow light frame of self-adhesive tape sprayed before the accessory is settled will help, or on the contrary a position on the lightest part of the edge. Lay the plaque on dry and check whether it is level against the edge, not against the terrain, which tends to be undulating. Apply the paint in thin layers and take the shine off glossy areas at the end.
