A genre figure of an innkeeper in the large 75 mm format, for which the Czech maker Black Dog is responsible. The name Palivec is well known from Czech literature – it belongs to an innkeeper who became one of the most quoted supporting characters of twentieth-century Czech prose.
A figure behind a counter is enormously rewarding for the maker of a scene, because it organizes the space around itself at once: a bar counter, a few glasses and a cloth are enough, and the scene tells a story even without a second figure. At the same time it is a subject with a Czech flavor that is almost impossible to find in ranges from other countries, so finished work of this kind tends to get more attention at shows than another soldier beside another armored vehicle.
A figure in civilian dress turns on the contrast between the white apron and the darker clothing under it. Never paint white with pure white – start from a grayish tone and keep pure white only for the topmost edges, otherwise the area loses its shape. Work the face in warmer shades and build the beard up with thin strokes; in a large format it pays to suggest even the stubble with a light gray-blue glaze. Add small signs of wear to the clothing so that the figure looks as if it really works. Keep the hands a shade darker than the face; on a man behind a counter that reads naturally.
