Sd.Kfz. 186 Jagdtiger 1:16 (Trumpeter) - a large-scale kit of the heaviest production fighting vehicle of the Second World War, with a full interior, photo-etched parts and individual track links.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the German Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer in the large 1:16 scale. The kit is built on more than 1500 parts spread over roughly 47 sprues and contains a full interior, photo-etched parts, copper tow cables and individual (workable) track links - no rubber band tracks. The finished model measures approximately 658 mm long and 235 mm wide, so it is a large and heavy piece that needs a proper display case as well as room on the workbench. This kit represents the variant with Henschel suspension (the more common form with nine road wheels per side). The rarer Porsche production, with eight road wheels per side, is a different suspension and is not what this kit represents.
The Jagdtiger was the heaviest production fighting vehicle of the Second World War - it weighed around 72 tons. In a fixed casemate superstructure on a lengthened Tiger II chassis it carried the huge 128 mm PaK 44 gun, which at long range would penetrate practically any Allied tank. Only around eighty were built. Weight was precisely its curse: the running gear, the transmission and the final drive were all overloaded, the machine often broke down or bogged in, and a considerable part of the losses did not come about in combat - crews destroyed and abandoned their own vehicles after a breakdown or when the fuel ran out. The Jagdtiger was built in two running gear variants: with Henschel suspension (nine road wheels per side, internal torsion bars) and with Porsche suspension (eight wheels per side, external paired torsion bars) - and they look visibly different.
It pays to build in subassemblies: finish and paint the running gear and the interior before you close up the hull - once it is glued you can no longer reach them. Glue the individual track links and leave them workable, so that they sit nicely on the wheels. In a large scale every irregularity shows, so clean up the parting seams honestly, use liquid cement for plastic and spray the surfaces with primer before painting. Paint with an airbrush, modulate the shades (large areas need a play of light) and build the weathering in layers - washes into the recesses, pigments for mud and dust on the running gear and the underside of the hull. Towing marks, chipped paint on the edges and dusty tracks will underline the story of an overloaded machine.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
