An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary Soviet medium tank in the large 1:16 scale. The box contains 751 parts, a full interior, individual track links in two versions (cleated and flat, 78 links each), rubber tires for the road wheels, brass wire for the tow cable and the springs and two variants of grilles. The decals carry the markings of a Soviet unit from the fighting at Kursk in 1943. The finished model measures 421 x 188 x 164 mm, so count on a display case and on a clear bench, because building the interior alone takes up more room than a whole ordinary tank in 1:35.
In 1941 the T-34 was a shock: a revolutionary combination of steeply sloped armor, wide tracks and a powerful V-2 twelve-cylinder diesel engine gave it toughness, mobility over rough ground and speed alike. The model 1943 is a particular production variant: a new cast hexagonal turret (nicknamed the nut for its shape) with two hatches in the roof, on later series with a commander cupola, and with it an enlarged fuel load and simplifications for production. The number 76 means a gun caliber of 76 mm (the F-34). Beware of confusion: the later T-34/85 is a different machine, with a larger three-man turret and a more powerful 85 mm gun. This kit is the older, 76 mm version.
Start with the interior and the running gear and close the hull up only at the end. Glue with a thin cement for plastic and join the large parts on a flat surface, so that the hull does not warp. In 1:16 the surface gives every imperfection away: after filling, sand first with a coarser grit, then with a fine sponge, and check the area with a primer. Give the cast turret a fine texture (by stippling thinned filler, for instance); a smooth turret looks untrue here. Paint with an airbrush: the base green, lightening of the centers of the areas, a filter and washes into the engraved lines. The wide tracks of the T-34 pick up mud, so weathering the running gear is the main attraction: dust, pigments and rubbing on the leading surfaces.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
