About product

DH.82A Tiger Moth with RAF cadets 1:32, an ICM kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth trainer biplane in 1:32 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. According to the name the package also includes a set of figures of Royal Air Force cadets of the Second World War period, so the model can be built straight away as a small scene from a training airfield. The number of figures, the number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Tiger Moth was a two-seat trainer biplane of mixed construction with fabric covering, powered by an inverted inline engine. It was created in the 1930s and became the basic machine of elementary flying training for the Royal Air Force and for the air forces of a number of Commonwealth countries. The upper wing spar was moved back, which made leaving the cockpit with a parachute easier; the open cockpits were arranged in tandem and the machine was deliberately designed not to spare a pupil: it forgave little and taught people to fly properly. It was built in thousands and after the war it went in large numbers to civil flying clubs, where a number of machines still fly today.

Building and painting tips

On a biplane the geometry decides everything. Glue the struts and the interplane struts on only after the lower wing has dried and keep checking the angles against the drawing in the instructions; it works well to glue with thin cement for polystyrene first and to secure the joint only once everything is aligned. Leave the rigging between the wings until the very end, after varnishing. Fabric covering does not take exaggerated accentuation of the panel lines, so use a fine filter rather than a sharp wash. Paint the figures separately from the model and work in thin coats on the faces; set them beside the machine or on a base only when they are finished.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of building biplanes
  • Collectors of trainers and interwar aircraft in a large scale
  • Builders of small scenes with figures beside an aircraft
  • Anyone interested in the history of flying training

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name confirms that figures of cadets are part of the release; the exact number is in the instructions and on the box.

It is more demanding than a monoplane, because the upper wing and the struts have to be aligned accurately. In the large 1:32 scale, though, the parts are more comfortable to work with than in 1:72.

It is not compulsory, but on a biplane the rigging raises the credibility fundamentally. It is done at the very end, after varnishing, for example from drawn sprue or elastic thread.

No. The kit contains the parts of the model; glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
