An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Stearman PT-17 Kaydet training biplane in the large 1:32 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. Besides the aircraft itself the set also contains figures of American cadets, so straight from the box you can build a small scene from flying training. The large scale brings out the intricate radial engine, the open cockpit and the fabric covering of the fuselage. The model is supplied as a plastic molding with a decal sheet; glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package.
The Stearman Model 75, designated PT-17 Kaydet in army service, was one of the most widespread training biplanes in the United States of the 1930s and 1940s. Thousands of American and Allied pilots went through basic training on this sturdy machine with its radial engine before they moved on to the combat aircraft of the Second World War. The open tandem cockpit, fixed landing gear and forgiving handling made it an ideal school machine. After the war hundreds of examples served as crop sprayers and sport aircraft and they are still a sought-after vintage type today.
A biplane will be appreciated by a modeler who is ready to take on the rigging - the bracing and wires between the wings are best tensioned with fine thread only after the varnish. Paint and assemble the cockpit and the engine before closing the fuselage up; in the large scale they are clearly visible. Use thin cement for plastic on the plastic parts, prime the surfaces and apply the paint with an airbrush. Bring out the fabric covering with a fine wash along the ribs. The cadet figures bring the finished display to life and help to establish the right sense of scale.
