A box with a fan bolted to a facade has been a distinguishing mark of urban buildings in warm climates since the 1970s. In photographs from the Middle East, the Balkans and southern Europe they hang in clusters under the windows, linked by hoses and cables, with ugly stains from dripping water below them.
