Streams of people fleeing ahead of the front were among the most common images of the European war. People left with whatever they could carry or move on a cart: quilts, suitcases, crockery, sometimes even a cage of poultry. Military columns met them on the roads every day, and the delay that caused affected even the advance of units. A figure with a cart therefore does not play a merely decorative role in a diorama: it explains why a tank is standing still, why a column has stopped and where the people around it are looking.
Before you reach for the glue, put the components together dry and find the position in which the figure really does lean its weight into the cart; a tilted stance looks more convincing than an upright one. Fill the seams after gluing with putty and sand them back, so that they do not spoil the long surfaces of the clothing. The wood of the cart stands out nicely with a dry brush drawn over a darker base, and leave the ironwork noticeably cooler instead.
