A fired brick is one of the most common building elements on a diorama. Bricks make up the wall of a house, the reveal of a window, a collapsed chimney and the rubble that spills into the street after a hit. The set brings bricks in 1:35 scale, that is in the size where the viewer can make out an individual piece and the gap between courses.
Individual bricks have the advantage over a finished part that they are laid exactly as the scene requires. They can be used to build up a breached corner of a wall, to face the base of a building, to lay out a low wall along a road or to pile a heap of rubble around a crater. Ruins in particular look convincing only when they are made of loose pieces: an irregular edge of masonry and a few bricks propped against the wall do more than a straight broken face.
Glue the bricks with cyanoacrylate glue; it holds even where cement for polystyrene has nothing to melt. Fill the gaps with modeling plaster or putty thinned to a slurry and wipe the surplus off with a damp cloth before it dries. Wash the surface before painting, degrease it and apply a primer. The brick shade is not uniform, so vary the base tone: shift a few pieces toward ocher and others toward gray, bring the result together with a thin dark wash and bring out the edges with a dry brush. Pigments will add the dust and the fallen mortar.
