Leopard 2A4 — special 40th anniversary scheme is a plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Revell. The main draw is the extensive decal sheet with the anniversary graphics and markings for several armies.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the main battle tank Leopard 2A4 in 1:35 scale from Revell, released as an anniversary edition for 40 years of the Leopard 2. The kit has 212 parts, a difficulty of 4 out of 5, and the finished model is roughly 276 mm long. The tracks are vinyl (rubber) — they slip on quickly, with no assembling of individual links. The turret turns, the hatches can be built open, the surface has engraved anti-slip texture, and the package also holds smoke dischargers and parts for the A4 version or the Dutch A4NL. The main selling point is the decal sheet: it offers eight options — besides the anniversary scheme itself, standard machines from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Poland and Greece. Anyone who wants maximum detail instead of a quick build can look to the Leopard 2 A4 from Meng — that one has individual workable track links, photo-etch and more parts, but decals only for German machines.
The Leopard 2 is a modern main battle tank with composite armor and a 120 mm smoothbore gun; the A4 version with its angular turret and flat front is its most widespread Cold War form and served with a number of European armies. Compared with the earlier generation Leopard 1 — a lighter machine of the 1960s with thinner armor and a 105 mm gun — it is an entirely different category. Forty years passed in 2019 since the Leopard 2 entered service in 1979, and for that anniversary a special scheme was created, the one this edition brings: light lines run along the outlines of the vehicle over a dark base, as if a technical drawing or a circuit board pattern had been printed straight onto the steel. They are joined by the flags of the most important user countries and anniversary lettering. The graphics are all on the decals — on a finished model they look very striking and make it a display piece that an ordinary camouflaged kit cannot offer.
The anniversary scheme needs a perfect surface underneath: large decals on dark paint will not tolerate a rough finish. Spray the base color with an airbrush, let it cure thoroughly and, before the decals, coat it with a gloss clear compatible with the paint used — otherwise matte ghosting will appear under the decals. Lay the decals down wet, in sections, and help them with a decal softener so that they settle into the engraved lines. At the end, even the surface out with a matte or semi-matte clear coat. Keep the weathering restrained — an anniversary machine should look clean, with no mud and no heavy chipping. If you are building one of the ordinary camouflaged options, work the classic way instead: the running gear before you close up the hull, a wash into the seams and dust pigments on the lower areas.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
