This glued plastic kit captures the Soviet light tracked carrier GT-MU, a small amphibious machine with light armor intended to carry people and material where wheeled vehicles cannot get through. Compared with tanks and infantry fighting vehicles it is an unobtrusive vehicle of support and reconnaissance tasks, but it is exactly such machines that give a collection and a diorama credibility. The 1:35 scale means a small model that is quick to build, on which the running gear nonetheless comes into its own.
For boggy and snow-covered regions the Soviet army needed light tracked machines with a low ground pressure, which can get across soft terrain and across water obstacles. The GT-MU belongs to this family. The vehicle swims without preparation and in the water it is driven by its tracks, so it needs no propeller. In service it was used to carry crews, signals and reconnaissance groups, to evacuate the wounded and to tow light loads. The light armor protects the crew from splinters and small arms fire, not from anti-tank weapons.
On a small tracked vehicle the running gear is the main thing on show, so give it time and check that the wheels lie in one plane. It is practical to paint the interior and the superstructure before you close the hull. Eastern equipment is usually single-colored, so bring the large surfaces to life by lightening the centers and darkening the seams. A model of this type takes a pronounced patina well, and mud and dried deposits on the underside and the tracks will only do it good.
