Barbed wire for 1:35 scale, contemporary form

An imitation of barbed wire for 1:35 scale. According to the name it is the contemporary form of the wire, not a type tied to the period of the Second World War. It is used to finish dioramas, bases and display tableaux off.

What it is suited to

Barbed wire is among the few accessories that set what is happening in a tableau by themselves. A piece along a road is enough and an empty area becomes a guarded space: an obstacle at a checkpoint, the fencing of a depot, a defensive position or the edge of a military area. In 1:35 scale it is at the same time big enough for the viewer to notice how the barbs are executed, so it pays to give it a moment extra and not to string it carelessly.

Tips for working it

• First plan the line of the fence out and place the posts, and only then string the wire.
• Let the wire sag slightly between the posts, as a perfectly taut line comes across as lifeless.
• Fix the ends with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue, and at a post a small notch helps.
• Paint with a dark steel base and apply the rust in spots, not along the whole length.
• Work with tweezers and carefully, as the points are small and bend easily.
