Guardrails along a roadway are among the elements an observer does not notice until they are missing. The second line of road accessories from Royal Model is devoted to them and brings, in 1:35 scale, a barrier that can be run along a road, along the edge of an embankment or around the curve of a bend.
The steel guardrail has appeared on European and American roads since the middle of the twentieth century, so it fits scenes from the later Cold War and from the present. It works nicely where a scene is meant to suggest the rapid movement of a column, a traffic accident or, on the contrary, a quiet drive through civilian countryside. A damaged, bent or broken section tells more than ten other objects: it can be used to explain that something heavy went through there off the roadway.
Fit the barrier only after the surface of the roadway is finished, so that the base can be worked on without obstruction. Galvanized metal is imitated best with a light gray base, over which a very fine dark soiling concentrated toward the ground is applied. Apply the reflectors and the markings with the tip of a brush, not with a decal, because the surface tends to be narrow and irregular. Bed the lower edge of the barrier into the surface, so that it does not look merely stood on the asphalt.
