The set from the brand Royal Model contains individual resin tiles with which the roof of a model house is covered or a ruin is completed. The pieces are laid one at a time, so the result never looks as stereotyped as a molded sheet.
It is the roof that gives away most about a building. Regularly laid rows with a level ridge suggest a maintained house, whereas a hole punched through, collapsed rows and a fan of shards on the paving speak of a hit. In scenes from southern Europe and the Mediterranean a curved tile also has its typical warm tone, which can set the color mood of a whole scene before you even add the figures. Fired roofing also behaves differently from sheet metal: it does not tear but breaks up into sharp fragments, which stay lying exactly where they fell.
Lay from the bottom at the eaves upward and let each row overlap the previous one slightly. Draw the backing out in advance, so that the rows do not wander. The painting is managed with a lightened terracotta, a wash into the joints and light dragged on dry along the edges; irregularity in the tone of the individual pieces is desirable here.
The package contains only the tile castings; the glue and paints needed for the work are not in it.
