A replacement for the wheels of a model of the heavy Sd.Kfz. 232 reconnaissance car in its eight-wheeled form, 1:35 scale. On a vehicle where the running gear is so conspicuous, the quality of the tires makes up a substantial part of the overall impression of the finished work.
The Schwerer Panzerspähwagen with eight driven and steered wheels was among the most complex German designs of its day. The vehicle could drive just as fast forwards as backwards, because it had a second driver's station in the rear. The form designated 232 carried a powerful radio set and, above the hull, a conspicuous frame antenna that made it recognizable from a great distance. It served with the reconnaissance battalions of the armored divisions and brought back reports before the main forces had deployed into battle formation.
Wash the castings before work and make the cuts where they seat onto the hub. With eight wheels it pays to paint them separately and fit them last, otherwise it is hard to get a brush between them. Check that they all stand in one plane; the simplest way is to stand the model on glass and let the glue harden there. Finally add dust and mud, although on a reconnaissance car a fine deposit suits better than thick layers of soil.
