Royal Model: Schürzen for the Panther Ausf.A (1:35)

This is an upgrade set from Royal Model, not a tank kit. It contains photo-etched side armor plates (Schürzen) and their brackets for a model of the Panther medium tank in the Ausf.A version in 1:35 scale. Thin etched metal looks more realistic and, in scale, more faithful than thicker plastic plates.

The real subject

Schürzen were thin steel armor plates hung along the sides of the hull and the running gear of German tanks. They protected the sides against antitank rifles and shaped-charge ammunition. The Panther Ausf.A was among the medium tanks of the Second World War, with a long gun of 75 mm caliber and good armor protection.

Building and painting tips

Carefully nip the etched parts out, bend them on a bender or over a sharp edge and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). For a realistic effect the plates can be slightly bent or damaged, as used to be common in the field. Degrease the whole assembly and spray a base coat before painting, then unify it with the color of the tank.
