An injection-molded plastic model of the Swedish turretless tank Strv 103B, known as the S-tank, in 1:35 scale from the Trumpeter brand. The kit captures the low turretless hull with its rigidly mounted gun and holds decals and vinyl, that is rubber, parts. This is the B version, which differs from the later Strv 103C.
The Stridsvagn 103 was a revolutionary Swedish tank of the nineteen sixties with an unconventional turretless concept. The gun was built rigidly into the hull and was aimed by turning the whole vehicle and changing its pitch with the hydropneumatic suspension. That gave the tank an exceptionally low silhouette and heavy frontal armor. The 103B version was the main form of the S-tank in its early years and brought a laser rangefinder, a new engine and further changes.
On a tank it pays to assemble and paint the running gear, the road wheels and the tracks before the hull is closed up. Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic. Lay down a primer before painting and spray the Swedish camouflage finish with an airbrush in thin coats. Volume comes from edge highlighting by drybrushing, dark washes in the recesses and pigments for the dust and mud effects on the running gear and the tracks.
