About product

Fiat G.55 Centauro in 1:48 scale, Smer

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Italian fighter of the Second World War in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Smer. The box holds plastic parts, clear parts for the canopy, decals and instructions. It is an older tooling that Smer issues in a new box: the surface detail is therefore raised rather than engraved, the parts count is low and the interior is done only in a basic form. With tooling of this age, expect small amounts of flash, some fettling of the fit and filling of the joints, which means more handwork for the builder, but also a subject that is not common in this scale. The decals allow the machine to be built in Italian as well as German markings.

The real subject

The Fiat G.55 Centauro was an Italian single-seat fighter powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 605 inverted V12, built in Italy under license. It was one of the trio known as the Serie 5, the new-generation Italian fighters with the German V12 engine, and it is considered one of the best Italian fighters of the war. Against the older types with radial engines it brought a higher speed, heavy cannon armament and good behavior at altitude. It saw combat in the closing phase of the war over Italy, but its production never reached large numbers.

Building and painting tips

First clean the flash off the parts and sand the parting lines. Glue with a liquid cement for plastic, and expect to fill and sand the fuselage and leading edge joints. Apply a primer before painting, which reveals any flaws. Raised panel lines disappear under sanding; if they matter to you, they can be carefully rescribed after filling. Paint with an airbrush: Italian camouflage with an ocher base and green mottle, or German markings.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in the Italian Air Force of the Second World War
  • Builders who do not mind an older tooling and enjoy fettling a model
  • Beginners looking for a kit with a low parts count
  • Collectors of the Serie 5 and of fighters with the DB 605 engine

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
